Why We No Longer Recommend Casa Santo Domingo for Destination Weddings in Antigua Guatemala

After nearly a decade photographing weddings at one of Antigua Guatemala's most iconic venues, we've decided it's time to move on. Here's why our recommendations have changed, and where we'd confidently send our couples instead.

We hate breakups.

As photographers, we spend our lives documenting love stories, not endings. We believe in commitment, in giving relationships every chance to grow, and in finding the good whenever we can.

That's why this chapter lasted nearly a decade.

Some wedding venues become part of your career.

Over the years, Casa Santo Domingo certainly became part of ours. We learned how the afternoon light moves through its ruins, discovered quiet corners that make beautiful portraits, and came to know the rhythm of a wedding day inside one of Antigua Guatemala's most recognizable hotels. We've photographed beautiful celebrations there and remain genuinely grateful to every couple who trusted us with those memories.

But after nearly a decade and hundreds of weddings across this city, we've decided we can no longer recommend it to our destination wedding couples.

This wasn't the result of one bad wedding or one difficult interaction. It was a decision shaped by years of experience, and by watching Antigua's wedding industry evolve while our experience at Casa Santo Domingo remained largely the same.

Over the years, we experienced too many situations at Casa Santo Domingo that made it increasingly difficult to recommend the venue with complete confidence.

Some of those experiences never made it into a review. They happened during load-ins. At security gates. In the hundreds of small interactions couples never see, but that quietly shape a wedding day.

Individually, any one of those moments could have been overlooked. Collectively, they changed how we felt every time we returned, and ultimately how we felt recommending the venue to our couples.

Every recommendation we make carries our name and nearly a decade of work in this city. That's why experience has always mattered more to us than reputation. If we're going to recommend a venue to a couple planning a destination wedding from thousands of miles away, we have to believe in the entire experience, not just the photographs it produces.

If you're beginning your venue search, we hope this article helps explain why our recommendations have changed, and introduces some of the Antigua Guatemala wedding venues we now recommend with complete confidence.

If you're still planning your wedding, we've also created in-depth guides to Antigua's best historic wedding venues and the trusted wedding vendors we confidently recommend after years of working together.

What Makes the Best Wedding Venues in Antigua Guatemala

One of the greatest privileges of spending nearly a decade photographing weddings in Antigua Guatemala is getting to know the people behind them.

Over the years we've had the privilege of working alongside some of Antigua's most talented planners, florists, musicians, chefs, caterers, filmmakers, makeup artists, and hospitality teams. Watching those professionals collaborate has taught us that exceptional weddings aren't created by beautiful architecture alone. They're created by people who genuinely care about making the experience extraordinary.

We've also had the opportunity to photograph weddings at luxury hotels around the world, from the Belmond collection in Formentera to the Biltmore in Miami and many remarkable properties in between. No matter where we are, the best venues always have one thing in common. Hospitality extends beyond the couple and their guests to every person helping bring the celebration to life.

When planners feel supported, timelines run more smoothly. When vendors are welcomed and trusted, creativity thrives. When every member of the team is working toward the same goal, the couple feels that energy without ever realizing why.

Over the years, we experienced too many situations at Casa Santo Domingo that made it increasingly difficult to recommend the venue with complete confidence. Individually, many of those moments could have been overlooked. Collectively, they changed how we felt every time we returned, and ultimately how we felt recommending it to our couples.

The Best Wedding Venues in Antigua Guatemala We Recommend Instead

After nearly a decade photographing destination weddings in Antigua Guatemala, we've had the privilege of working at nearly every one of the city's most celebrated wedding venues. Every property has its own personality, from historic ruins and intimate boutique hotels to private estates designed for full wedding weekends. More importantly, every venue has its own team, its own rhythm, and its own way of welcoming the people who bring a wedding to life.

Over the years, these are the places we've found ourselves recommending again and again, not simply because they're beautiful, but because we've experienced firsthand how they care for our couples, their guests, and every professional working behind the scenes to create an unforgettable celebration.

Villa Bokéh

Villa Bokéh has become one of Antigua Guatemala's premier luxury wedding venues and one of our favorites. As a member of Relais & Châteaux, it offers a level of hospitality that's recognized around the world. The expansive grounds, lush gardens, private lakeside corners, and beautifully landscaped property create the feeling of an exclusive estate where an entire wedding weekend can unfold naturally. It's a venue that gives couples space to slow down, celebrate with the people they love, and enjoy one of the most beautiful settings in Antigua.

Pensativo House

Pensativo has long been one of our favorite boutique wedding hotels in Antigua. Behind its colonial façade are intimate courtyards, rooftop terraces, and elegant spaces that feel almost storybook-like. We love photographing weddings here because every corner feels thoughtfully designed, allowing couples to experience the charm of Antigua without ever leaving the property.

Mesón Panza Verde

Mesón Panza Verde has a timeless character that's difficult to replicate. From Don Rodrigo's celebrated restaurant to its historic courtyards, gardens, and artistic atmosphere, it feels like one of Antigua's classic grand homes. There's an old-world elegance here that appeals to couples looking for something intimate, refined, and deeply connected to the city's history.

Casa Troccoli

Casa Troccoli offers something entirely different from Antigua's larger hotels. With rooftop views overlooking the city, exceptional food and wine, and one of our favorite hospitality teams in Antigua, Casa Troccoli creates weddings that feel intimate, relaxed, and incredibly personal. Every celebration feels uniquely its own.

Santa Clara Ruins

Santa Clara Ruins remains one of Antigua's most iconic wedding venues. The centuries-old stone architecture creates an extraordinary backdrop while still offering couples enormous flexibility to design a wedding that feels completely their own. Whether you're planning an intimate gathering or a larger celebration, the ruins provide a setting that's both visually striking and remarkably versatile without ever competing with the people at the center of the day.

Ermita de la Santa Cruz

For couples planning a more rustic destination wedding, Ermita de la Santa Cruz offers one of the most distinctive ceremony settings in Antigua. Its open-air historic façade, peaceful atmosphere, and understated beauty create a celebration that feels authentic, relaxed, and deeply connected to Guatemala's colonial history. It's a wonderful choice for couples looking for something a little less traditional while still embracing the character that makes Antigua so special.

San José El Viejo

Smaller in scale but rich in character, San José El Viejo is one of Antigua’s most charming wedding venues. Its restored colonial architecture, rustic courtyard, and intimate atmosphere create a celebration that feels warm and personal, while still offering enough space for both the ceremony and reception. It’s an excellent choice for couples who want the convenience of Antigua without the scale of the city’s larger venues.

These are some of the Antigua wedding venues we feel confident recommending based on nearly a decade of firsthand experience. Each offers something different, but all have teams and environments that support the people bringing a wedding to life.

If you’d like to see what weddings at these venues actually look like, explore our recent destination wedding galleries from across Antigua Guatemala. Each celebration reflects the people, places, and experiences we’re proud to recommend.

Our recommendations aren't based on brochures or venue tours. They're based on years of photographing real weddings, on the ground, at every one of these properties. Explore our recent Antigua Guatemala wedding galleries to see these venues through the eyes of the couples who celebrated there.

Planning Your Destination Wedding in Antigua Guatemala

We've photographed beautiful weddings at Casa Santo Domingo, and we'll always appreciate the couples who invited us there.

But our recommendations have never been based on reputation alone.

They've always been based on experience.

After nearly a decade photographing destination weddings in Antigua Guatemala, we've learned which venues consistently create an environment where couples feel cared for, where vendors work together with professionalism and generosity, and where every person involved shares the same goal of creating an unforgettable celebration. Few photographers working in this city have shot as many weddings across as many of its venues, which is exactly why couples planning from thousands of miles away trust our read on where to celebrate.

That's the knowledge every couple deserves before choosing where to celebrate one of the most important weekends of their lives.

If you're planning a destination wedding in Antigua Guatemala, we'd love to help you navigate the city we've been fortunate to call home for nearly ten years. Beyond creating beautiful photographs, we're passionate about connecting couples with the venues and creative partners we've come to trust through years of experience.

Beautiful architecture will always matter. But the people behind it matter even more. That's the standard we'll continue recommending, because that's the standard every couple deserves.
