The Story

Whenever I recall Gaby and Nico’s wedding I always say that it is the wedding that changed my career. Gaby reached out to me in early 2019, roughly 7 months before her wedding day. I was relatively new in Guatemala and had only photographed a handful of weddings in the country. Gaby had heard of me through one of her creative connections and felt my work was the right answer for her wedding. It was the first time in Guatemala someone wanted to book me due to word of mouth and not from finding my photography online. And the best part was: my creativity was the perfect match for Gaby and Nico’s vision of their wedding.

Gaby and Nico had been in love for a some time and wanted a wedding that reflected who they were: stylish, low profile, genuine people. The wedding that followed would be one of the most memorable of my career and one that changed how I approached wedding photography in Guatemala.

A Story of Love and Connection

Gaby tells me that when she and Nico met in calisthenics class it was love (lust) at first sight. Nico was drawn in by Gaby’s beautiful eyes and Gaby fell for Nico’s perfect smile. From that day their story blossomed into a deep relationship strengthened by shared values and activities. Luna, Gaby and Nico’s daughter, was and continues to be one of the most important people in their life. Therefore, she was a central part of both Gaby and Nico’s relationship and their wedding day. When I learned about their story and had my first creative consultation with Gaby about what she wanted for her wedding photography, I knew that we would be a perfect fit.

THE WEDDING DAY

On the day of the wedding I traveled from Antigua to Selina Atitlan to photograph Gaby and Nico’s dreamy boho wedding on the shores of Lake Atitlan. I was unusually relaxed to be photographing a wedding of two talented creatives. However, Gaby had told me that she wanted me to take full creative control of their wedding pictures and allowed me to have full direction of the photos I made, which eased my nerves. As a photographer herself, Gaby had high expectations and I was eager to fulfill them.

Gaby and Nico got ready in Selina Hotel in Panajachel with their closest friends and family who traveled from around the world to witness their marriage. Once Nico had put on his suspenders and Gaby had slipped into her dress, we headed to the ceremony location. Gaby had the most unique ceremony entrance I had witnessed. She rode the short distance from Selina to the lake shores in tuk-tuk with her father. It was incredibly beautiful and to this day remains one of my favorite wedding photos.

The ceremony took place with views of Lake Atitlan in the background. The couple sat at a table during the civil part of their wedding. Their friends and family bearing witness to their legal marriage. Afterward, Gaby and Nico sat on hay bales while Gaby’s brother and Nico’s aunt led the couple and their guests in a special cacao ceremony. It was one of the most beautiful and intimate ceremonies I have had the privilege to be a part of. As the sun set, Gaby and Nico hugged their friends and family who congratulated them both. Their first dance took place under string lights as the lake glowed during blue hour. It was truly a beautiful moment. For the rest of the night guests ate, drank, and danced in celebration of Gaby and Nico’s love.
